A court in the Deoghar district of Jharkhand has sentenced a 60-year-old woman to life imprisonment for the murder of her daughter-in-law. The additional sessions judge, Rajendra Kumar Sinha, also imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on the convicted individual, Anita Devi.
According to the additional public prosecutor, Ashok Kumar Rai, the victim, Kavita Devi, had given her statement before her death, which led to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) at the Sarwan police station on April 23, 2022.
In her statement, the deceased mentioned a dispute with her mother-in-law. Following the argument, she returned home where dry hay was stored. Shortly after, her mother-in-law arrived and set fire to the hay, igniting Kavita's saree. Despite her cries for help, no one came to her aid. Although some individuals attempted to extinguish the flames, she succumbed to her injuries later. The charge sheet was filed on March 10, 2025, leading to a swift trial and the court's verdict.
